Substance Use Disorders
Mental health is a complex phenomenon and it consists of different components such as personal beliefs, attitude, communication skills, ability to handle stress, and support system Alzheimer’s disease. There are also environmental and genetic factors that contribute to its development. Mental disorders are also prevalent among the elderly.
Counseling is an essential component of mental health care, especially for persons who have substance use disorders. Substance use disorders include dependence on drugs and alcohol. Counseling helps the person in identifying his own thoughts and feelings, which gives him an opportunity to change his behavior and approach to life.
Counseling also enables the person to develop interpersonal skills such as negotiation, assertiveness, and diplomacy, and these help in maintaining well-developed relationships. Substance abuse treatment involves both medicinal and psychotherapeutic procedures, which are offered by professional therapists and clinics.
The onset of substance use disorder among youth has a significant impact on the societal structure because they are more likely to engage in criminal activities. In addition, research indicates that untreated mental health care cases may result in severe consequences, such as increased crime rates, societal withdrawal, and reduced quality of life.
Because of this, it is important to address substance use disorder and its associated problems among youth as early as possible. According to the Youth Health study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in four American children ages 12 to 17 has at least one instance of having had one incident of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) characterized by restlessness, distractibility, impulsivity, overactivity, and other similar symptoms.
