The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) for Roofers and Waterproofers will recruit 20 new roofing apprentices this year. The program will begin in May 2021 and run through May 2022. There are four regions in which apprenticeships are offered. Each recruitment region will have several openings in the roofing trade. JATC is located at 7706 Maltlage Drive, Liverpool, NY. Admission requirements are the same as those for other apprenticeship programs. You must be 18 years of age and have a valid photo ID. Applicants will be required to wear safety harnesses and pass a drug test before they can begin.
The Roofers Apprenticeship
The responsibilities of a Roofers apprenticeship include six hundred and seventy hours of hands-on training per year. During their apprenticeship, apprentices also attend 144 hours of classroom instruction per year. The program is free, and all training is done on the job by a roofing contractor. Apprenticeships are funded by a Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC) made up of Union and Employer Representatives. They are accredited by the Ohio Apprenticeship Council and the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (BAT). Applications are accepted from March to September each year.
The United Union of Roofers (UOR) sponsors an apprenticeship program for roofing and waterproofing apprentices. This apprenticeship program is designed for people who are devoted to learning the trade. Apprentices must be physically fit and able to work for long periods of time instant fixes for leaking roof. They may be required to carry heavy shingles or other materials up to 60 pounds. Physical stamina is also an important quality. Apprentices must have the excellent hand-eye coordination to complete their work in a safe and efficient manner.
While the wages for Roofer Apprentices are lower than those of journeymen roofers, they can expect to earn 60 percent of the average journeyman roofer’s salary. However, this can vary widely, depending on the union and location. The United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers (UURW) states that a qualified roofer can make up to $45 per hour. According to the latest statistics, the 90th percentile earned around $71,920 per year.
To obtain an apprenticeship as a roofer, you will typically need a high school diploma and intensive training. Many experienced roofers offer these apprenticeship programs. Typically, a roofer must complete 144 hours of technical training and two thousand paid on-site training. The apprenticeship program takes about 42 months and requires good physical health. The duration of the program varies from program to program. When completed, an apprentice will be able to work independently as a journey worker.
In addition to learning the basics of roofing, a roofing apprentice will also learn various other construction skills. Whether it is learning to read blueprints, learning building codes, or mastering math, roofers will gain valuable experience. They will also learn first aid and safety techniques. A roofer can earn a Master’s degree, though it is rare to become a Doctoral. In addition to acquiring the necessary skills, an apprentice will learn about various construction safety and health codes.
